Hopi - How Bees Learned to Fly and Peaches Became Sweet
One day Bird Woman went to visit Bee Woman. They spent the day talking about their children, gardens and other important things. Night came and Bird Woman prepared to leave, but not before she invited Bee Woman to visit her the next day.
In the morning, Bee Woman left very early to go to Bird Woman's home. (This was before bees had wings, so it took theme longer to travel anywhere.) Bird Woman lived in an opening of a rock, making it particularly difficult for the little bee to reach her friend. When she finally did, Bird Woman had her sit down and offered some peaches for refreshment.
"I love peaches," Bee Woman replied. "I eat them all the time. However, my friend, these peaches taste a little sour. Would you mind if I made come medicines to make them taste better?"
"That sounds fine," the bird replied. "I look forward to tasting your medicine.
Bee woman put her honey over the fruit, which now tasted sweeter than ever. In fact, Bird Woman was so thrilled with the results that she said, "You have made my peaches so delicious that I want to do something for you." Then, she pulled out a few of her feathers and made a small pair of wings.
"Now you can fly!" she exclaimed.
But Bee Woman was worried. "I don't know how to fly," she pointed out. Bird Woman understood and showed the bee how it was done.
And ever since that time, peaches have been sweet and bees have flown.
