Choctaw - How the birds brought corn from the spirit

by Mitch Shoemake

A long time ago the Choctaw people were hungry. Some mothers were arguing because their children were starving. Some men couldn't go hunt for deer because they were too old.

The spirits heard the Choctaws. The Choctaws wanted a new way of life. They wanted a way so they did not have to always hunt. But the Indians were still hungry. The next day some birds brought seeds and scattered them. The wise men told the others it was corn seed and the corn grew fast. The birds were sent by the `Great Spirit'. The Choctaws didn't have to go after the beast they now had corn. The Choctaws also had a new way of life
