Choctaw - Nanih Waiya: Bones of the Sacred Mound
by Kelli Thompson Stories
The Choctaws' sacred mound is known as "The Nanih Waiya Mound".People say that the elder men from the light centre were originally from the dark center of the Nanih Waiya Mound. The Choctaws get their strength from the Spirits at the nanih Waiya Mound.
The Choctaws brought their ancestors' bones from the west and buried them in the Nanih Waiya Mound. At that time the Choctaws had a brought. Then during the drought, an old medicine man came to the Choctaws and told them that he could make rain. They were told that the medicine man was going to go around the Mound 4 times and ask the spirits to help him. Every time he went around they had to pour water on his back. They did what they were told and it really worked. The rain saved the corn, it filled the streams, and put an end to the Choctaw's greatest droughts.
