Alabama Farmers Market Listing
Seniors Receive Food Coupons through efforts of the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission.
You must come by the Tribal Center to apply or request a form to be sent to you. Don't bother leaving a message, we can't catch these as soon as we should. You need to talk to someone at the office or come by. This applies to Alabama residents. Phone: 256-582-2333
This yearʼs program has allotted 200 coupon books to the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission, which is a four-fold increase from the previous years. Each book consists of 7 $4 coupons ($28 per book) which can be redeemed for fresh fruit and vegetables at the local county Farmers Market and/or designated Roadside Produce stands. In total, each tribe will receive 40 coupon books which amount to getting a $1,120 grant to buy fresh produce for the senior members of your tribes. The eligibility requirements are as follows: (1) must be 60 years or older (born anytime before 1948) and (2) must meet a specific income level as designated for a specific number of people in the household of the recipient
2008 Guidelines $18,200……for a household of ------1 $24,500……for a household of ------2 $30,800……for a household of ------3 $37,100……for a household of ------4 $43,400……for a household of ------5 $49,700……for a household of ------6 $56,000……for a household of ------7 $62,500……for a household of ------8
The most crucial requirement of this program, for the tribes, will be to ensure that the coupon books issued to their tribal members are all redeemed. All individual coupons have a serial number to them and it is this number that the stateʼs Farmers Market Authority tracks to determine the effectiveness of the SFMNP for the Native Americans, as well as the rest of the state. Each recipient will complete a form which acknowledges meeting the eligibility requirements and receiving the coupon book. This year a new helpful device has been added in that a Proxy individual can sign for the coupon books. All that the Proxy needs to do is complete the form, both front and back, to receive the coupon book. These forms will be returned to AIAC by the tribe on a designated date. This agency will then return the forms to the Farmers Market Authority. A complete accountability must be maintained on each coupon book. Remember, this is federal money from both USDA and HHS supporting the SFMNP.
After a specific date if a tribe has not been able to issue all of its coupon books the tribe must return them to the AIAC office. The agency will then reissue these books to the tribes that have established a greater need for their tribal members. The objective of this is to successfully issue all the coupon books to our tribal peoples, in the hope that this effort will serve to enhance their nourishment and health.
TIMELINE
May 2008 Tribes pickup all materials and coupon books from AIAC.
June-July 2008 (1) Tribes issue coupon books to eligible tribal members. (2) Tribes monitor redemption rate of tribal coupon books.

(3) Tribes needing additional coupon books must make their request in writing to AIAC. This process will be on a first come first serve basis.
August 15, 2008 AIAC will reissue the coupons books available to the tribes which requested additional assistance.
September 5, 2008 All documentation pertaining to the issuance of SFMNP coupon books must be returned to the AIAC.
September 12, 2008 AIAC participation in the FY2008 SFMNP ends.
Nutrition Programs Infromation below
The Senior FMNP. FMNPs provide a direct tie between production agriculture and nutrition by providing seniors and nutritionally at risk women and children the opportunity to buy fresh local produce directly from farmers.
Senior FMNP- Both criteria must be met in order to receive SFMNP coupons.
1. Age - person must be 60 years of age or older on the day of issuance, no one under age 60 is eligible.
2. Income level - household gross income must not exceed:
$18,200……for a household of ------1 $24,500……for a household of ------2 $30,800……for a household of ------3 $37,100……for a household of ------4 $43,400……for a household of ------5 $49,700……for a household of ------6 $56,000……for a household of ------7 $62,500……for a household of ------8
2008 Guidelines
The Goals of the Farmers Market Nutrition Programs (FMNPs) are clear:
To provide fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from farmers markets and roadside stands to low-income seniors and nutritionally at risk women and children.
To increase domestic consumption of agricultural commodities by expanding or aiding in the expansion of farmers markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs.
To develop or aid in the development of new and additional farmers markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs.
The method is simple:
Give low-income seniors, women and children coupons to redeem for fresh fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets and roadside stands along with related nutrition education.
They are unique among federal programs:
In that, the FMNPs encourage health and agriculture agencies, communities, farmers, and recipients to be active partners in a common effort to support the local economy and improve the health of families.
The results are:
Farmers increase their client base and incomes.
Needy families get nutritious, Alabama grown fresh fruits and vegetables.
We all stand to benefit from a generation of young children who start out life with good nutrition and a healthier senior population.
These programs are examples of direct marketing in which everyone benefits.
How To Use Your FMNP Coupons
Choose a farmers market from the list below of redemption sites. All markets are self -governing. It is important that you note the markets days and hours of operation and inquire locally for exact opening and closing dates. (These dates may or may not coincide with the valid dates to redeem FMNP coupons, April 15 - November 15).
Walk through the market to compare the variety, quality and price of the produce items on display at each farmer's stand before deciding what you will buy.
Use your FMNP coupons to buy fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from farmers who display the "Farmers Market Nutrition Program" sign. If you have any questions about selecting and preparing fresh produce, please ask the farmers.
Each coupon is worth $4.00. You cannot Receive change from a coupon. If your purchase is less than the amount of one or more coupons, the farmer will add more fruits and vegetables of your choice to make up the difference.
You are welcome to use cash at the market to buy additional fresh produce.
You cannot use your coupons to buy non-produce items, ornamental pumpkins, or gourds.
FMNP coupons cannot be used at a grocery store or any location that is not listed on our redemption site. FARMERS MARKETS AND ROADSIDE STANDS LISTING *OPENING DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE THIS LIST CURRENT AND ACCURATE AS OF 05-14-08.
